Teams: Individual and Vision Goal Alignment

Strong leaders make their corporate strategy transparent to their teams. Continuous communication of the strategy and its supporting goals helps maintain alignment. Many leaders assume the strategy is apparent and understood. But, this understanding is often not the case. It is important to make the vision clear and understood.

Does Your Team Understand the Corporate Strategy?

One of the most important aspects of employee engagement is an understanding of how the team member’s function fits into the mission and strategy of the organization. According to The Strategy-Focused Organization,  by Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton, only 7% of employees fully understand their company’s business strategies and what’s expected of them in order to help achieve company goals. If a leader expects alignment of team member goals with organizational strategy, the leader must communicate the corporate strategy. There must be a clear line of sight from the team’s functions to the corporate strategy.

Make certain your team understands the corporate strategy. Demonstrate how each goal and function of your team members fits into this strategy. Describe and define what the team does that contributes to the strategy. Let the team know what they must do to help ensure the success of the corporate strategy. Clearly define and describe success of the strategy and the success of the team members’ functions.

A leader who communicates his strategy cascades goals throughout and across his team, and aligns those goals with the desired outcomes of the team, increases the engagement of his team.

An aligned and well-communicated strategy:

  • Empowers the team to function optimally within the organization
  • Puts people resources at the ready for strategic motion
  • Provides an environment conducive to team engagement

Change

Market conditions change. So, organizations’ priorities change; they must. Growth requires change. If the organization is complex and comprised of groups with various functional roles, the goals of those groups, and of the individuals that make up those groups, must be in alignment with the organization’s vision as set forth by its leader.Change in the priorities of the organization or in the structure of the organization ,often drives changes in the functions of  those groups. These changes can cause misalignment in goals and priorities.

If change has caused a disruption in the role of a member of your team, you must have a one-on-one discussion with that team member.

  • Let him or her know the reason for the change.
  • Come to agreement on how the change benefits the organization.
  • Tell them exactly what you expect.
  • Consider a change in the team member’s job description. Make the team member a part of rewriting the job description.

Strategy and Vision Goal Alignment is Critical to Success

The success of any team depends not only on the success of its members, but on the fact that the members are functioning as a team. Team members must fully understand what the corporate goals are and how their function fits into the overall strategy. Individual goals must be clear. Clear communication of how the individual role, goals, and performance affect the overall function of the team, is critical to success.
